The 2010 Australia Day 50c was struck by the Royal Australian Mint to celebrate Australia’s official national day. Marking the anniversary of the landing of the First Fleet in 1788 at Port Jackson (now Sydney) and the raising of the British flag by Arthur Phillip, Australia Day is celebrated annually on the 26th of January.
Created by noted Royal Australian Mint designer Vladimir Gottwald, the 2010 Australia Day 50c features a design featuring an array of people joining hands as a show of unity, surrounding a map of Australia. The inscriptions ‘Celebrate what’s great’ and ‘Australia Day’ are found above and below the design respectively, with the denomination of 50c at the heart of this interesting motif. Australian legal tender, the obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
