The 2003 Women’s Suffrage $1 was issued by the Royal Australian Mint for the centenary of women first exercising the right to vote in a Federal election. Limited women’s suffrage had been promulgated in some colonies during the 19th century, and in 1902 the Federal Government legislated that women over the age of 21 had the right to vote in Federal elections – excluding indigenous Australian women, who did not secure the vote until 1962.
A richly symbolic type, the 2003 Women’s Suffrage $1 carries an interpretation of the ‘Suffrage Banner’ created by Melbourne-born painter Dora Meeson Coates (1869-1955). Carried by Meeson, among others, in the Women’s Suffrage Coronation Procession in London in 1911, which demanded extension of voting rights to women, the banner is part of the Australian Parliament Art Collection. Australian legal tender, the obverse of this coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
