Australia Centenary of WWI 2014 $1 Spirit Lives Aluminium-Bronze Uncirculated Coin Pack
Struck by the Royal Australian Mint, the WWI Centenary 2014 Spirit Lives $1 was issued to pay homage to the 100th anniversary of the First World War, and all those who served the nation during the conflict.
Known as ‘the war to end all wars’, the First World War saw over 420,000 Australians out of a population of just under five million serve in the armed forces, with more than 330,000 serving overseas. Over 60,000 Australians lost their lives, with approximately 137,000 wounded – a casualty rate of over 65%, one of the highest of British Empire forces.
A poignant tribute to Australia’s ‘Baptism of Fire’, which many view as the making of the then new nation, the reverse motif of the WWI Centenary 2014 Spirit Lives $1 carries an official WWI Centenary logo, featuring a depiction of an Australian soldier with head bowed and rifle reversed. Official Australian legal tender, each coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
