The 1993 Landcare $1 was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to highlight the importance of preserving the environment, and to emphasise the significance of water quality. Symbolising the inextricable link between environmental protection and water quality, the reverse design is dominated by a tree depicted in the flowing form of water. Consisting of hands clasped to form the shape of Australia, the official logo of Landcare Australia forms the perfect complement.
Although originally intended to be issued in limited numbers for the collector market, this unique, one-year-only type was struck for circulation due to a dramatic shortage of $1 coins leading up to Christmas 1993. An official Australian legal tender issue, the obverse of this coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf.
